Québec City named 2nd sport city in Canada
Quebec, March 20, 2019 - The Global Sport Impact Index (GSI Canada) has ranked Québec City Canada’s number two city for hosting sports events. The announcement was made at the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance (CSTA) Sport Events Congress held at the Ottawa Convention Centre March 19–21, 2019.
Québec City was narrowly edged out by Montréal, but its ranking as national runner up is a step up over last year’s 3rd place and puts it ahead of Edmonton, Toronto, and Vancouver. In 2018 Québec City hosted 20 national championships and 26 international sport events.
“We can be proud of our city’s second-place ranking. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of key players in the sports sector and the hard work of Québec City Business Destination to attract conventions and sports events, we are once again in the national spotlight. Québec City has the capacity, expertise, premium facilities, outstanding urban locations, and most importantly, a spirit of hospitality combined with remarkable know-how,” said Pierre-Michel Bouchard, president of Québec City Business Destination.
The Sport Impact Canada Index, developed by CSTA in partnership with Sportcal, publisher of the annual Global Sport Impact (GSI) Report, helps Canadian cities better understand the impact of their sports events. It is based on national championships and international competitions held in Canada in 2018 as well as national championships and international events awarded to host cities for 2019 and beyond.
