Québec City, first French-speaking business destination to obtain Biosphere certification

Québec City, February 14, 2024 - Québec City has achieved a milestone: becoming the world's first French-speaking destination to obtain Biosphere sustainable certification. Following the lead of Destination Québec cité (DQc), the first regional tourism association in the province to earn the Biosphere certification in early 2024, numerous industry stakeholders are joining the movement towards sustainable tourism to create a robust culture of environmental sustainability throughout the destination.
Several of Québec City Business Destination's partners are already officially Biosphere certified, or in the process of obtaining their certification.
World-Renowned Recognition
Developed by the Responsible Tourism Institute, Biosphere is an international sustainability certification and management system, recognized worldwide by UNESCO and UNWTO (World Tourism Organization). Biosphere operates in over 77 countries, its network currently includes more than 55 destinations worldwide and over 4,000 member businesses from various sectors, including hotels, restaurants, retail, media, and many others. Since 2017, the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, this system has been elected as the best certification tool for sustainability, aligning practices of destinations and businesses with the United Nations' 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Biosphere-certified entities are assessed according to their contribution to each of the SDGs.
About Québec City Business Destination
Created in the fall of 2013, Québec City Business Destination is the official meetings and conventions bureau to contact for holding and organizing all types of business events in markets outside Québec. The mission of this sales force, which is the result of a partnership between Destination Québec cité and the Québec City Convention Centre, is to promote the holding of conventions, meetings and other events in markets outside Québec.
